A condition known as hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder that makes life more difficult for its sufferers. The condition occurs when the nerves responsible for triggering your sweat glands go into overdrive and instruct your glands to produce an abnormal amount of sweat.
Not only can severe cases of hyperhidrosis have serious practical consequences, but sweating is also embarrassing. Sweat leaves noticeable stains on clothes, and can make you feel more self-conscious during social or professional interactions.
Treating Hyperhidrosis With Radiofrequency
If typical over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants have failed to improve your excessive underarm sweat, sweat gland reduction with the INFINI radiofrequency device may be the solution you’re seeking. Unlike some other types of hyperhidrosis treatment whose effects are only temporary, ablation with INFINI-RF permanently treats hyperhidrosis.
A series of INFINI-RF treatments will work to block the sweat glands responsible for producing excess sweat, which helps reduce perspiration and prevents those awkward underarm sweat marks from forming. INFINI-RF uses heat to destroy the sweat glands with radiofrequency energy. This in-office procedure typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to perform, and there is no need for downtime afterward. Read on to learn more about this innovative treatment for hyperhidrosis.
Frequently Asked Questions – INFINI-RF and Hyperhidrosis
Q: How does the treatment work?
A: INFINI combines the microneedling treatment with radiofrequency technologies in a single device to create maximum results. The microneedles deliver a strong boost of fractionated radiofrequency energy, creating thousands of micro-coagulation zones which help precisely target the overactive sweat glands in the underarm skin.
Q: Is the treatment uncomfortable?
A: Most of our patients find this treatment quick and relatively painless, since we apply a topical numbing agent onto your skin before beginning the procedure to make you more comfortable. During your treatment, your skin may feel hot or tight, and a small amount of bleeding is possible, but will quickly resolve.
Q: How long does the procedure take?
A: You can expect to be in our office for about an hour total on the day of each treatment. Before beginning the treatment, we will have a brief consultation with you, so we can review what to expect during the process, as well as provide you with instructions for how to take care of your skin after receiving treatment. Then, we’ll prepare your skin with a numbing product. The INFINI treatment itself takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to perform.
Q: What will my underarm skin look and feel like afterward?
A: Immediately after the treatment, your underarms may feel warm and may also appear red, as if you’ve gotten a little sunburn. These effects generally go away within 24 hours. Some patients also notice mild swelling around the area for a few days. There may be some tiny scabs from the microneedling in the first week after your treatment, which will naturally flake off your skin. As your skin continues to respond to the treatment over the next week or so, your underarms may feel itchy and slightly warm, which is a sign of the skin healing and new collagen beginning to form.
Q: How should I take care of my skin after receiving the treatment?
A: Immediately after your treatment, we thoroughly cleanse your skin with a gentle antiseptic lotion. In the rare case that your skin feels hot or uncomfortable in the day or two following your treatment, you can use a cooling ice pack wrapped in a clean towel at home.
Do not apply any deodorant, lotion or any other product to your skin for 12 hours after receiving treatment. This precaution is because you will have multiple tiny puncture marks in your skin left over from the microneedling process. Any topical product like deodorant or aloe vera can cause a stinging or burning sensation, and can also allow bacteria to enter your skin and lead to an infection. Please allow your skin at least 12 hours to heal from the microneedling before applying any skin care products to your underarms.
Q: How soon can I expect to see results?
A: You’ll notice a reduction in sweat production in approximately one week after your treatment, with improvements continuing to occur as your skin heals. On average, you can look forward to a 20 to 25 percent reduction in underarm sweating with each treatment.
Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: How many treatments you require will depend on the severity of your underarm sweating. For best results, most patients need three to four consecutive treatment sessions. However, the best way to determine how many treatments you might need for your individual case is during a consultation with us, where we’ll discuss your situation in full, including the results you expect.
Q: How long should I wait between scheduling treatments?
A: We recommend spacing treatments between the sweat gland elimination and your skin’s natural recovery cycle. The complete healing process often takes four to six weeks, so booking treatments every four weeks will create the most uniform results. However, there is no negative effect on your results if we perform treatments anywhere between three- to seven-week intervals.
Q: How long will my results last?
A: Once your sweat glands have been completely blocked as a result of a course of treatments, they will be permanently unable to produce sweat. However, you have thousands of tiny sweat glands in your armpits, a few of which may remain even after your INFINI treatments. These few remaining glands may still produce some sweat, but it is usually minor.
Q: Is INFINI treatment safe for me?
A: The INFINI procedure is FDA-approved and is safe for almost any patient. However, anyone who is seriously ill or has a suppressed immune system will have less ability to produce collagen and diminished healing abilities, and are not suitable candidates. Likewise, habitual sunbathers, heavy smokers or those with a chronically stressful lifestyle may not respond as well or might need more treatments to get results, which can be minimal at best. Our medical staff will discuss more suitable treatment options at your consultation.
We will be unable to perform INFINI on or near broken or infected skin, so if you have any injuries in or around your underarm area on the day of your treatment, we will need to wait until they heal fully.
