Heliocare oral sun protection
A capsule, not a sunscreen. Heliocare uses Fernblock, an extract of the Polypodium leucotomos fern, taken daily to support the skin's own defence against sun exposure.
Why we carry it
It works with your sunscreen, never instead of it.
This is the point we make with every patient who asks about it. An oral antioxidant does not replace a broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat or shade. What it does is add a layer for people who spend real time outdoors in Florida, and for patients managing melasma or photosensitivity.
Not a substitute for SPF
Keep wearing sunscreen. Heliocare is an addition to the routine, not a replacement for any part of it.
Useful for melasma
Often recommended alongside topical pigment treatment, where cumulative light exposure keeps undoing the progress.
Taken daily
One capsule a day, with an extra on days of heavy exposure. Ask your provider what fits your situation.

Heliocare Advanced with Nicotinamide
Adds nicotinamide (vitamin B3) to the Fernblock extract. Nicotinamide has its own evidence base in skin cancer prevention, which is why this is the version we usually recommend.
Heliocare
The original Fernblock formulation. A smaller bottle, and a straightforward place to start.
Common questions
Questions we get asked about Heliocare.
Can I stop wearing sunscreen?
No. This is the most important thing to understand about it. Heliocare supplements sun protection; it does not provide it. Sunscreen, shade and clothing still do the work.
What is Fernblock?
An extract of Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern, standardised and studied for its antioxidant effect on sun-exposed skin.
Which one should I take?
We usually point patients to Advanced, for the added nicotinamide. Your provider will tell you if the 60-capsule version suits you better.
Is it safe with my medication?
Tell your provider and your pharmacist what you take. It is a supplement, and supplements can interact.
